WHY HEALTHY ISN’T PERFECT
So many people give up on living their healthy lifestyles because they have a setback or they think that their version of healthy isn’t perfect enough.
I used to eat ice cream and think that I lost all of my progress… but it just doesn’t work like that (phew!)
So don’t worry, creating a healthy lifestyle is a work in progress! Healthy isn’t perfect and that’s 100% okay. A lifestyle is called a lifestyle for a reason… It changes with your life! And last time I checked, my life is different every single day 😉
HOW TO CREATE YOUR VERSION
A healthy lifestyle is not an endpoint, so there’s no clean transition to “getting healthy”. It’s messy and complicated and there are challenges, setbacks, and mistakes. What’s healthy for you today may not be healthy for you tomorrow, so it’s important to listen to your body and check in with how you feel. As long as you do what makes you feel good today AND tomorrow, you will always be able to stick to your customized version of a healthy lifestyle.
Here’s how to create your healthy lifestyle:
1. EAT THE RIGHT DIET FOR YOU
How do you know when you’re eating the diet that works best for you? You should feel amazing! Drink lots of water, eat real food, and enjoy the food that’s on your plate. If sugar controls you, let’s address how you can eat less sugar.
2. MAKE PEACE WITH YOUR BODY
No matter what you look like, you deserve to feel good in your own body. Whether it means getting stronger physically in the gym or overcoming disordered eating habits, you are not alone. Everyone can be empowered to be the person they want to be or to reaffirm who they already are.
3. SLEEP, REST, AND RECOVER
It’s amazing how many people overlook the impact sleep has on their life. If you want to have more energy, the first thing you need to do is improve the quality of your sleep. Rest is the time we take to rebuild our bodies and recover from the stress of our jobs, injuries, relationships, and workouts.
4. LOVE MORE AND STRESS LESS
Love your family, love your friends, and most importantly, love yourself. Make sure you are living a life that makes you happy. You are a product of the people around you, so make sure these people are adding to your life and not taking away from it… that also means talking to yourself with a positive attitude and eliminating negative self talk. This can be one of the hardest things to work on, there’s no doubt about it.
But if you want to be happy, taking control of the energy around you is a necessary challenge. Put good energy into the world, and you will get it back.
5. STOP PUNISHING YOURSELF
We like to punish ourselves for the things we do that don’t align with our goals. Despite eating great all day, we guilt over the fact that we ate a few too many cookies. Even though all of this guilt over a lack in willpower (which doesn’t exist) has become normal in our health-obsessed culture, it doesn’t have to be that way. If we accept that a healthy lifestyle is the one that serves our specific needs, we can treat ourselves with a lot more kindness over the little things we wish we had done differently.
6. ELIMINATE “FAILURE’
The important thing is to not let a missed workout or a night of over-indulging stop you from your continuing your healthy lifestyle. Of course, if you are stressed and exhausted the cookies are going to be extra tempting, it happens to everyone! But whether or not you let that stop you has nothing to do with failure.
In that moment, you did what you did because that’s what you wanted or felt you needed. Accept that you can’t change the past and analyze what made you feel like you failed in the first place so you can be present in what you want right now.
